BACKGROUND
The vintage of 2016 had a quick and early start due primarily to the weather and the light vineyard yield. We had a very cold May that created “shot berry” during flowering (normal and tiny berries on the same cluster).
Ultimately the fruit we received was exceptional, with great color, acid and structure. A cellar worthy wine.
WINEMAKING
An early morning picking helped get these grapes destined for resting in tanks while still very cold. This allowed the grapes to retain their aromatics and delicacy Pinot Noir is known for.
We cold soaked the grapes for four days prior to a warm slow fermentation. Pressed gently and down to French oak barrels (50% new) to complete the fermentation process.
Aged sur lees for 6 months to further create graceful, smooth wine.
TASTING NOTES
The nose is massive ripe raspberry, pomegranate, and cherry with hints of violet, vanilla, crushed bay leaf, and graphite.
The palate leads to red plums, more pomegranate, and red cherry notes with hints of black tea leaf, anise, and hazelnut.
