Berkeley Wine Festival: Tastings on your Doorstep

Wines here, there and everywhere
With an eye on local sourcing, several East Bay wineries were invited to participate at the festival.

he Caravel Wine Group, headquartered in Fremont, is owned by three East Bay friends who sell directly to the public. Coming from non-winemaking backgrounds, and operating without their own winery or vineyards, the vintners label themselves as "outcasts." Their Outcast label displays a cowboy overlaid onto a colorful photo of the San Francisco Bay. The company offers a unique marketing ploy: anyone who finds the five hidden wine symbols on the Outcast label receives a free bottle of the wine. Guests were too busy sampling the Outcast Merlot and Caravel Zinfandel to discover the disguised treasure.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
This is national Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Caravel Wines is recognizing this 2nd leading cause of cancer death in women by participating in the John Muir Health event, "An Evening in Pink". All proceeds will go to the John Muir Health's Breast Services
Caravel and Outcast Wines cruise into Viva Los Gatos this Tuesday
This coming Tuesday, October 2, 2012, at Viva Los Gatos, discover a new wine venture that's taking the Bay Area by storm – Caravel and Outcast Wines.
In the summer of 2008, a trio of California wine enthusiasts came together and decided to set out on a winemaking journey. Their shared passion for fine wines, and their focus on creating a world-class brand, led partners Alex, Anuj, and Peter, to embark on their first bottling in 2010. Their inaugural effort – Caravel Wines – launched with a 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon and their – now signature – White Blend. Both wines sold out within months.

Caravel & Outcast were wines conceived outside of the traditional wine establishment
With excellent sales results filling their Caravel sails, the partners launched a second line of more upscale wines, Outcast Wines.
According to Alex and his partners, "Caravel ships (think Columbus' Nina and Santa Maria) were the first vessels to carry fine merchandise like clothing, spices, and wine from port to port around the world. Today, the Caravel brand exemplifies this same spirit – uniting people one glass at a time."
They go on to say, "Outcast describes a wine conceived outside of the traditional wine establishment by all of us – Alex, Anuj, and Peter. Believe us when we say that this band of brothers is idiosyncratic and full of personality."
A portion of their profits go to charitable efforts globally
In keeping with the founders' global view, Caravel and Outcast Wine buyers can feel good about the wines they enjoy, knowing that the purchase is making a difference. "We pledge 5% of our profits to projects that support improving quality of life across the world."

Viva Los Gatos Tuesday Wine Night features Caravel & Outcast Wines
It's sure to be an evening of discovery and adventure. The Caravel California White Wine – featured at Viva Tuesday Wine Night – is an alluring blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Muscat, Semillon, and Viognier.
Plus, how can one resist the Outcast Wines with names like "Drifter" and "Gunslinger" on the label? "Drifter" is a bold 2008 Page Nord Vineyard Syrah, and "Gunslinger" is a San Francisco International Wine Competition Gold Medal award winning 2007 Napa Valley Petite Sirah.
